Apparently the masses at NYIT didn’t, because for the first time in 19 years, the NYIT Men’s Tennis team came back to compete in the NCAA Division II level. Led by coach Kelly Waters, and her recruits; Wendy Bellanton, Kushtrim Bejtullahu, Andrew Cohen, Kenny DeFay, Anthony Gaspari, Imran Llahi, KeumSek Kim, Julian Marcon, Kevin Natividad, Taner Oztimurlenk, Vojislav Pecikoza, Varuna Sembukuttige, Michael Sleszyneski, and Filip Van Eylen, were looking to make an impact in the division. A good collection of the team came from foreign shores like Kosovo, Belgium and Serbia as well from our own back yard of Long Island. The majority of the team was recruited from high school programs while other members of the team earned their spots as walk ons. Even though the season is over for team, nothing is stopping Coach Waters from looking ahead to next year.

Sadly, this bears team fell victim to the customary, lack luster season for new teams and teams returning from a long standing hiatus. Going into a second still hungry after a 1-9 season, the only win was a shut out 9-0 against Post University early in the season. Coach Waters will still be looking for recruits from other countries and throughout the United States to extend an offer so these young men and women could come and gain an education as well as play on the team and toward Waters goal of “reaching the teams potential.” Open tryouts should start in the upcoming fall 2011 semester. The new season begins spring 2012. The path to the conference tournament will soon start again.
