After an AMAZING season last year with an overall record of 27-7 and appearing in the Elite 8 tournament for the first time in program history, the NYIT women’s volleyball team continues to make a name for themselves!

“The team is already ahead of last year as far as team chemistry and experience,” says head coach, Gail Wasmus. “We have a lot more depth and that allows us the possibility of several different line ups depending on our opponent.”

The Bears beat out four-time reigning ECC Champion, Bridgeport University, as the favorite to capture the league title in 2016. They have ten returning players, including the Preseason Player of the Year, Karolina Moderova and last season’s ECC Setter of the Year and captain, Allison Fowler.

“As a captain, it’s my job to hold my teammates accountable for doing their part to be a winning team,” says, Fowler. “When things get chaotic, I want to be that presence on the court for my teammates to keep a level head and to set an example that will create success for the team as a whole.”

Although most of the team is similar to last year, it didn’t take long for the newcomers to get in sync with the program. “The girls were really welcoming and I really feel like I fit in right from the start. I’m excited to see how far we can potentially go as a team,” says Tiffany Verni (a sophomore transfer from Dowling College).

With determination, passion, and strong leadership, the team started the season off hot, as juniors Allison Fowler and Karolina Moderova continue to live up to their past successes, as they have already earned back-to-back ECC weekly awards.

“Obviously as a coach I am very proud of them,” says Wasmus. “They both are an integral part of our success and they know they need to show up each night with their “A” game. Both of these players should be considered as two of the stronger players in our Region.”

It is exciting to see the early achievements of this talented team and the potential they have to win it all this season. To keep up with NYIT Women’s Volleyball, visit nyitbears.com and follow @nyitbears on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Go Bears! Grrrrrrreat article Ms. Duer! Thanks for promoting and encouraging the Bears Volleyball program. Claws and Kills, we’re so proud of our team and, of course, now four-time Setter of the week. Allie Fowler #Viper. And what an amazing team and Coach! Talent on top of talent giving us depth and options. #RollTech #RoadToNationals.
