A state of shock occurred on the final day of January at News 12 Long Island as longtime anchor and reporter Judy Martin passed away. Martin was only 49 years old and according to Newsday through members of her family, “Martin died of natural causes.” She was remembered by her colleagues as a tenacious, award-winning journalist and “free spirit” who spoke often about balancing her career and personal life.

Judy Martin, a New York Emmy Award winner was part of News 12 Long Island for 25 years and covered a long list of major news stories over her career that included 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In addition to her career at News 12 she was a Forbes.com blogger and founder of WorkLifeNation.com, an educational portal dedicated to transforming stress in an “always-on” world. For two decades Judy has tracked business, workplace culture and career trends with an emphasis on work-life balance and stress management strategies, while emerging as a stress management coach, international speaker, and meditation/yoga teacher who focuses on exalting human capital in a 24/7 new hi-tech economy. According to the network, Martin also worked for National Public Radio (NPR) and CNBC during her career.

Her broadcasting career wouldn’t have been possible without her college education at NYIT where she earned her B.F.A. in Communications and Broadcast Journalism in 1987. She was also part of NYIT LI News Tonight a nightly newscast hat saw students interested in news writing, reporting, and production participated in the production of this nightly news program under professional supervision. LI News was on the air from 1983-2011 and Judy Martin is one of many graduates of the program to have a career in the New York media market that include her colleagues from News 12 Long Island. “Mourning the loss of my mentor,” said News 12 Long Island reporter and fellow NYIT graduate Shari Einhorn on her Twitter account. “20+ yrs but Judy Martin still lovingly called me her little intern. Missed already.”

Judy Martin was remembered by members of the NYIT community who worked with her while she was a student and part of LI News Tonight

I was very saddened by Judy’s passing and she made a big difference in many people’s lives. The one thing I will always remember about Judy was her mellifluous voice- beautiful, soothing tone that always was a comfort to hear. One of Judy’s last tweets was “Life is short. Take time to chill.”  I believe Judy knew in her heart that she was not going to have a long life so she made sure she had a rich and meaningful one and she did just that.  -Gary Licker, former Program Director at LI News Tonight and a 1992 graduate of NYIT

Judy Martin started her reporting career at LI News Tonight and was energetic, enthusiastic and dedicated to doing the best job she could. I was stunned to hear she died. She was a great newswoman with a wonderful personality and a caring soul. -Carol Pack, former Assignment Manager, anchor at LI News Tonight, and 1986 graduate of NYIT

I remember Judy when she was a student in the late 80’s. She was an excellent student and the most professional I’ve been around. -Professor Don Fizzinoglia, Chair of Communication Arts Department

A video montage in tribute to Martin was posted on Newsday’s website that can be found by clicking here. Judy Martin will always be remembered by the NYIT community and was one of many alumni success stories through NYIT LI News Tonight.
