Campus Slate Celebrates 50 Years!!

How do you put into words a time that formulated a career, a passion, a life? 25-years-ago this year, I graduated NYIT and left the Campus Slate as Editor-In-Chief. I had served as E.I.C. for three years, a fantastic time, a time that would frame the rest of my life and create a career as a publisher that has lasted 25 years.

So many memories, so many friendships, so many stories… knowing the industry, I know there isn’t enough ink available here. The Campus Slate started in 1966, is a student run publication, a voice of the students. My years at the Slate as a student were amazing ones. We covered some great stories, had some great times and created a number of great careers.

I’ve since returned to NYIT Old Westbury campus, now as a professor and as the advisor of the Campus Slate- a life/ career, come full circle of sorts.

Working with the current generation of Slate staffers is a delight. They are passionate about the craft, about the product and about the industry. They are keeping with traditional journalism while staying on the cutting edge of technology both with content and delivery. I’m delighted to be a part of the team at this fascinating time in the Slate’s history.

Like my advisor twenty years ago, I try to give them lots of space to learn and grow, while occasionally waving red flags if I think they’re going in the wrong direction. Oh, who was MY advisor when I was editor of the Slate?  None other than NYIT’s President and CEO Dr. Edward Guiliano.

Dr.  Guiliano and I could probably recall some interesting stories, (and yes, an “ugh” or two), from those yesteryears, overall with a smile and fondness. One of the things I know we share is the love of writing, the love of a good story and the freedom of a fair press.

I’m proud to have been in the past, a part of the Slate’s history and I’m honored to be part of its’ future.
