March Madness is over—but at NYIT; May Madness is on the horizon: That’s Mayfest, the biggest, most anticipated event on campus and this event is for everyone. NYIT students are known for buckling down to the last hour of the day studying for final exams, but Mayfest provides students with the chance to unwind as the semester comes to a close. This year Mayfest is scheduled for Thursday 1st May 2014 at 12pm to 3pm. Even though it’s just 3 hours, a lot takes place, students stand in long lines just to get a taste of amusement. However, it is never an excuse to be tardy or skip class when the event is going on. Some professors are kind enough to end class early to give students a chance to beat the lines and get more fun in. You are only a true NYIT student if you attend an event only because there is free food, however this event features more than enough than just free food for everyone to want to come enjoy the festivities.

Mayfest is an annual event hosted by the Student Government Association in collaboration with the Campus Programming Board. The committee ensures that the event spotlights carnival rides, great music, games and lots and lots of free giveaways and who doesn’t like free giveaways? There are also other fun things to take away from this event like temporary tattoos, customized graffiti hats and memorable pictures. Each year the committee tries to add something new to keep the occasion interesting, but who knows what to expect or what they have up their sleeve for this year? Nya Petitinoel, a sophomore at NYIT adds, “I think that Mayfest is really fun. When I went to it last year I enjoyed playing the games and going on the rides with my friends and it was a great way to have fun at school. I look forward to the music, the t-shirt stand and I definitely want to get a hat this year and the water gun game because I won a prize.”Kamal Seide, a member of the Campus programming Board says, “Mayfest is going to be crazy. There is this one ride that is going to be there it is insane, I cannot wait to see people’s reaction to it.” Michael Beaupre also a sophomore at NYIT includes “I think it’s a great event for all the students to enjoy the end of their academic year before finals come up. I think it really shows that the school is really trying to give its students a good time when they need it. Personally, I look forward to the fake tattoo booth because it was something that everyone could do and try out new things.”

Many of you must be itching to know what is in store for this year’s Mayfest so here’s a sneak peak of what is to take place, not to spoil the surprise, but just to give you a little hint for your hungry taste buds. Look forward to seeing a few new attractions so hold on to your seat because “The Zipper” is coming to town. There will also be an entertainment that is known to be the best in the world. May 1st is expected to have lovely spring weather and from record, Mayfest has always been blessed with good sunny weather, so it’ll be just right to wear those capris, leggings and lighter t shirts. This is an event you DO NOT want to miss; it is definitely a kick-start to a fun summer.
