Of the 8 teams at NYIT, the women’s basketball team definitely makes their stride and relevance show at the halls and pathways of the school; their low number of defeats and the strong bond that they possess as teammates. Although the team is a little more than half way through the season, with 16 games played and 10 remaining, the ladies have managed to score 11 wins thus far. With consistent dedication and hard work, there is a great chance that the team will continue to do well.

The team is comprised of three seniors, four juniors and seven freshmen. YES SEVEN! Which means half the team is made up with rookies, but not to worry because they sure have proved that they are capable to play with the “Big Dogs” since they have made great contributions to all the teams wins for the unfinished season. In fact the East Coast Conference (ECC) has honored Shannon Duer “Rookie of the Week” for week 4 and then again for week 10 and also “Player of the Week” for week 6. Shannon led the Bears to a 101-60 victory over LIU Post, which was a game to remember as it was the first time since the 2000 to 2001 season that NYIT scored over 100 points. “It feels good to be awarded from the ECC, it’s a great accomplishment and I could not have done it without the team.” Shannon adds.

Senior captain, Rebecca Romeo was also rewarded the East Coast Conference “Player of the Week” for week 11. She says, “I have a lot of confidence, because the fact that the team is made up of freshmen and they are all getting play this season I think next year would be even better.” Romeo also says, “The biggest factor is that we stay together as a team and learn from the experiences that we have had this year because it will only make us better.” With so many wins in the bag already for the season, the Bears must have had intense training which Audrey Knowlton, a sophomore on the team replies, “It depends on the day really, sometimes it’s hard mentally but you never know what you are going to get until you get in there.”

The team has recently beat higher ranked LIU Post 83-61, which gave the school some Bear Pride since LIU Post is NYIT’s neighboring rival. Coach Wayne Jones says, “Our returning players and outstanding rookies, look forward to the second half of the 2013-2014 year and the NYIT Women’s Basketball community and fans can look forward to a bright future that entails our program for competing for the ECC Championship, NCAA Berth and even Nationals”. Coach Jones concludes, “We have not begun to play our best basketball yet so we have a lot of room to grow, our talented trio of seniors, Demitra Apergis, Rebecca Romeo and Alex Venuto have been the key ingredient for our success. I think that having a team of freshmen is an opportunity to create a long lasting program that would be successful over the next four years.”

Overall the Women’s Basketball team continues to triumph for the 2013-2014 year. Ashley Hightower, a junior on the team feels, “The team’s performance is good, we have improved and matured a lot from the beginning of the season.” The future of the team is in good hands as the women’s basketball team is comprised of a talented bunch.
