After falling to LIU Post in the ECC Championship game last year, the NYIT Men’s lacrosse team returns to the field this season with a chip on their shoulder.

“There was a big concentration on our overall conditioning during the off season,” says head coach Bill Dunn. “Weight training to get stronger, aerobic training for more stamina, flexibility training for prevention of muscle pulls and agility/speed training.”

The NYIT men’s lacrosse team has been listed sixth in the 2015 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)/Nike Preseason Top-20 Poll for the second consecutive season.  Coach Dunn announces five upperclassmen, Thomas Hughes, Kevin Long, Jon Lynott, Shawn Murphy and Nick Sidaras as captains ahead of the 2016 campaign.

Three seniors from the NYIT lacrosse program have also earned Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American nods- Jon Lynott (Senior), Shawn Murphy (Senior) and Thomas Hughes (Junior) on the first, second, and third teams, respectively. Lynott, was headlined as the 2016 Preseason Defenseman of the Year and earned a spot on the Preseason All-American First Team. Murphy, an All-ECC selection last season, was named to the Preseason All-American Second Team. Lastly, Hughes, a Preseason All-American Third Team selection, also picked up his first USILA All-America honor in 2015.

With many returning veterans, the team has a great amount of leadership as well as high standards for themselves this season. “I hold my team accountable by being a great role model. I am not a big talker so I try to do my best by showing them what hard work is; whether that’s being first in a run or making sure to be in weight room and always doing the right thing at practice,” says Senior captain Jon Lynott.

In their season opener on Wednesday February 17th , The Bears held St. Thomas Aquinas College to one goal as they defeated them 20-1. After an incredible game, the Bears still look for ways to get better. “We need to all ‘buy in’ to the offensive and defensive schemes. We need to work together more on the field and communicate better as a whole unit and play with confidence. LIU Post has won the ECC championship the past two years and it would be great to bring this years championship back to NYIT,” says Junior captain Tom Hughes.

“We must play bigger, in the bigger games. With that being said, play loose and don’t look at the big picture but the one that is in front of them on that day” – Dunn.
