NYIT Men’s and Women’s Cross Country team is off to a strong start this season with several achievements not only for the team but for certain athletes as well. Senior Captain Tom Ruppel completed his first collegiate first place finish during the York college invitational; aiding the rest of the men’s team to 2nd place overall. Freshman Irene Chepleting was named ECC rookie of the week for two straight weeks. As they are entering the halfway point of their season, Ruppel talks about the team’s overall success. “We are having one of our better seasons in the programs history. The men’s and women’s team are placing very well in all of the meets we go to and a couple of us have been receiving ECC weekly honors along with it. A freshman on the women’s team, Irene Chepleting, has been awarded ECC rookie of the week almost every week we’ve competed. Myself, Dina Ragab, and Melissa Pierre have been receiving honorable mentions as well.”

Ruppel continues: “We had a lot of talent return from last year’s team with the addition of a few new faces. We recruited Tomas Lieb from the men’s tennis team, Dina Ragab from the women’s basketball team, and we recruited Irene Chepleting as a freshman who comes to us from Kenya. Everyone has been working hard and diligently to come together the day of a race to perform to the best of our abilities. We believe that with the hard work we are putting in now that we will come together as a team and perform well at the conference championships as well as the regional championship. We were in a rebuilding phase for most of the season last year and this year we believe that if we come together at the same time we will have a great deal of success.”

They have come together and are looking to continue their success as the season moves along. For more information on NYIT Cross Country, follow the Bears @nyitbears on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
