This year, NYIT baseball is looking to make a statement to other teams in the conference. They not only have the physical skill of a great baseball team but also, according to team captain Thomas Joannou, the team has an edge like no other.   Thomas calls it their “tough edge”.

“Our strength is our determination. We are a well-balanced team and we will need our defense, offense, and pitching to be there every game,” said Joannou. He truly believes in order to win games; they must show up as a team collectively and cannot show any selfishness or individualism.  They must work as a team in order to succeed.

“This is the most talented and most complete team I have seen here at NYIT but the most significant thing I see from this team is the desire to be great. Every player is motivated to better himself to help this team win. My fellow captains as well as fellow upperclassman have set the tone from the beginning and this team has responded greatly. I trust every one of my teammates because I see how hard each individual works. And no matter the result I know for a fact everyone has given it their all. I am excited to see all our hard work pay off.”

Robert Malvagna, the head coach of the Bears, has high expectations of his younger team members. “They now know what it takes to compete on the Division 1 level,” said Coach Malvagna. “With the day to day grind both physically and mentally, they have learned time management between the classroom and the marathon of a 56 game schedule.”

The Bears started off the season on the weekend of February 20th at Coppin State in Washington, D.C. NYIT started the year off strong as they finished up the weekend 2-1.  Pitchers Matt Diaz and Dixon Marble both led The Bears to a victory in games one and three; not only were the teams pitching and defense outstanding but their offense was crucial in their victories. Senior Joe Daru began his last season as a Bear strong.  He went 11-14 at the plate over the weekend.

“As our leadoff hitter, it is vital he gets on base as our offense revolves around him,” said Coach Malvagna. “He is an excellent base stealer and when he is on base puts extreme pressure on the defense.”

“Joe is the player who gets us started at the top of the order and is the anchor of our defense in centerfield,” said Joannou. “He has become a great leader and has helped all players below him learn the college game. It will be a big adjustment without Joe at the top of the order but we are hoping players continue to learn from him and have an easy transition next year.”

Jimmy Bulva also had an incredible 6 RBI’s (Runners Batted In). Joannou finished off the series with a clutch 3 run Homerun to win game 3. The series in all was a team victory.

NYIT has not only a plethora of players with elite physical skills, but all players are intelligent ball players and are cognizant of what has to be done to win. The younger players are learning and have great leaders to guide them through a great season of baseball. The Bears are improving rapidly. If they all work together and step up in the big situations, then this team will not only have a great year but they may turn heads while doing it.
