February 14th is a few days away, and you want to do something special with that special someone.  You don’t want to come off as cheap, but let’s face it.  Between gas money or bus fare, books and all the other incidentals of college life, who can afford to be a big spender on Valentine’s Day?  These five dates will give you all the special romance you crave without devastating your budget.  And you won’t have to take your date to the drive thru to do it!

The Coffee House Options

The Witch’s Brew

311 Hempstead Turnpike

West Hempstead, NY 11552

(516) 489-9482

Website?

The Brew, as it is always referred to by its patrons, has been around for over twenty years.  Passing through the entrance, one is greeted by ambient lighting and exotic incense.  While you wait to be seated, be sure to check out the dessert case across from you;  if you have a sweet tooth, you will not be disappointed.

One of the most eclectic eateries on Long Island, NYIT students will find the vibe relaxed, and the seating cozy.  While “real food” is served here, the stars that really shine here are the desserts and the drinks.  Completely alcohol free, visitors can peruse six pages of teas, coffees, and Italian sodas to name a few beverage options.

The Bottom Line –  Two pots of tea, and two desserts will cost you approximately $25, after tax and tip.

Pro Tips – Try to be at the Brew before 8, or after 11 to get prompt seating.

The Cup

3268 Railroad Avenue

Wantagh, NY 11793

(516) 826 – 9533

Located right by the Wantagh train station, it’s extremely convenient for those who may not have cars, but still want a great date spot.  For those who drive, be careful where you park, my suggestion is to park in commuter parking across the street under the train station.

Besides its location, the Cup offers an abbreviated menu of classic teas, light “real” food, and it’s own innovative take on coffee drinks and desserts.  The house specialty here are the ‘pies smooshed in a mug.’  Imagine your favorite pie, in a mug, warmed up and topped with ice cream and whipped cream.  If you’re an experienced tea or coffee drinker, (or your date is) this is a great place to go.

The Bottom Line –  Two drinks, two desserts, will run approximately $30 after tax and tip.

Pro Tip – Arrive before 9:30 if possible and drivers, try and time your arrival around the time when the commuter train comes into Wantagh for the best chance of easy parking.

The Ice Skating Option

The Rink at Christopher Morely Park

500 Searingtown Road

Rosalyn, NY 11576

(516) 571 – 8113

For all our athletes, outdoorsmen (and women!), the date option you might really like is a chance to bust a move on the ice rink.  According to the park website, the 200 ft by 80 ft rink was first opened in 1986 and remains a hit among winter visitors to the park even to today.

On Fridays there are two open sessions for ice skating, the first is at 4pm, and the second is at 8:30 pm.  Plan on being to the park fifteen minutes early to find parking, pay, and get your skates.

The Bottom Line:  $20 per person admissions, and $5 skates rentals.

The City Lover’s Option

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

1000 5th Avenue

New York, NY 10028

(212) 535 – 7710

If you are just a little thoughtful, this could be the perfect date for those who love the city and love art.  With the world class collection of art available for viewing at the Met, there are often special exhibits going on in addition to their flagship collections.  Find out who your date’s favorite painting or painter is; or find a topic that you know they’re interested in.  Surf over to the museum website (http://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/) or the main collections site, and check to see if they are running or have anything that might speak to your date.

Taking that bit of time and effort will mean so much more than a lavish dinner at Per Se.

The Bottom Line – The suggested admissions price is $12 per person at the student rate.

Pro Tips – Take the train and subways to get to the Met, and leave your car at home.

The Classic Movie Option

Cinema Arts Centre

423 Park Avenue

Huntington, NY 11743

(631) 423 – 7619

This year on Valentine’s Day, Cinema Arts will be featuring Breakfast at Tiffany’s at 7:30 pm.  The Audrey Hepburn classic will surely impress your date with your nod to one of Hollywood’s most famous and romantic films.

The Bottom Line – $11 per person
