It’s free hour at the NYIT campus on a Thursday.  While some students are heading off to find food, a group of 20 are heading to Room 411 in Theobald Hall to find fun and games.  Literally: This is NYIT’s Game Club, an informal student organization made to give students a place to go for relaxation.  At this club, you can play video games, card games or just spend time with your friends and enjoy yourself.  The room gives you a lively and pleasant experience.  The members are very easy to get along with, so the Game Club is also a good place to meet new friends.

Students, like you, have a variety of activities they can have fun with.  You can play Trading Card Games, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic: the Gathering.  There are video games on the X-Box 360, such as Marvell vs. Capcom, Castle Crashers, and Star Wars Battlefront that you can enjoy.  The console games are usually fighting based games.  The Internet is also available if you want to watch videos or play online games.  And when the Game Club does not have a console hooked up to the television, you and other members can see what is happening on the large TV screen.  If none of these activities are what you are looking for, you can just bring in your own games to play or share with other members.

At first the Game Club was an unofficial club, started by Nick Cintron, a student who has graduated from NYIT.  There was no official room for the club, so college students would gather in an empty room on campus, plug in a game console and start having a good time.  But Aaron Lebowitz, a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, decided to make the club official and get a room that members could go to instead of going to a different room each time.  “I thought it was beneficial because you get two TVs in the room,” says Lebowitz.  The club officially started in the Fall 2010 semester as a once a week gathering every Thursday.  But the Game Club has changed to a twice a week set up for this semester to help college students have more opportunities to come in and take a break.

As far as progress is concerned for the Game Club, they are in a very good position.  The only thing that needs to be done is getting controllers and consoles available at the school.  Members have to bring in their own controllers and systems to the club, which isn’t even much of a problem.  “Right now things are pretty good,” says Lebowitz.  “I’m thinking about getting a budget for the club.”  This would allow students to leave their own consoles and controllers at home, which would make the club’s situation even better.

Granted, the Game Club doesn’t exist to serve some higher purpose or deal with a serious issue.  But still its members say it plays an important role in the lives of busy NYIT students.  “I’m glad we have it.  It’s a really good place to relax,” says Josh Perez, a sophomore majoring in Business Administration.  “I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good time and hang out with their friends.  Who doesn’t love video games,” says Efe Oriakhi, a sophomore majoring in Computer Science.

All NYIT students are welcome to the Game Club.  Bring a video game or a trading card deck and take a break from work.  This club meets during free hour (12:30-2:00) in Room 411 in Theobald Hall at the Academic Quad on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Feel free to have some fun!  The members are happy to get more students for the club.  If you have any questions about the Game Club, you can contact Aaron Lebowitz at alebowit@nyit.edu.
