Welcome back to school, everyone!  Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to end along with it.  NYIT has plenty of activities coming up that may be of interest to you, especially if this is your first year here.  We all can relate to the exciting yet often times nerve wracking feeling of entering a new school as an incoming freshman.  Many times options for activities are not always so clear; I know I wish that kind of information had been more readily available for me when I was new here!  That’s where The Campus Slate comes in to save you from that unfortunate fate-think of us as your one-stop manual for having the best freshman year ever!  As for upperclassmen- don’t think we’ve forgotten about you-these activities are fun for everyone.  I sat down with Shelly Schneider and Robert Sinckler, both Recreation Supervisors here at NYIT.  They specialize in your on-campus entertainment.  So let’s get down to business!  Without further adieu, here’s our list of…

7 THINGS YOU NEED TO BE DOING RIGHT NOW AT NYIT!

  1. FOLLOW THE NYIT CAMPUS PROGRAMMING BOARD:  Get some help from your Smartphones!  This group is specifically in charge of all of the fun events that happen on campus.  Even better, some events are designed to give back to the community!  INSTAGRAM: @NYITCPB_OW, TWITTER: @NYIT_CPB_OW
  2. NYIT Intramural Flag Football: This was the number one fun activity that Shelly and Robert (Aka “Sinck”) told me about.  Even better, this is an especially perfect route to take if you aren’t currently involved in a sports team at NYIT.  The point of intramurals is to meet friends, get some exercise, show your competitive side, but most importantly to have fun by not taking the scoreboard too seriously.  The season begins Tuesday, September 17th, 2013-both guys and gals welcome!  Hurry and register your team at the Student Activities Center!  And if flag football isn’t really your thing, there are plenty of other sports to try such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, and even video games!
  3. NYIT Student Government Association: Do you have a passion for politics, current events, and important issues and subjects pertaining to yourself and fellow students?  The NYIT SGA is a perfect way to get involved and make a difference in what’s happening on campus- after all, the SGA is the official “voice” of the student body.  This is a great way to meet fellow motivated individuals and also happens to be an ideal counterpart to anyone’s resume.  For more information on how to join, contact SGA President Alvaro Jorge Guerrero Uribe at aguerr11@nyit.edu.
  4. Bingo Night-I got some more insider info from Werda Alam, a current sophomore at NYIT and freshman student ambassador.  She told me about Bingo Night, which is held every month in “The Bear’s Den” in the SAC, usually on Wednesdays.  Follow the Campus Programming Board for up to date info!
  5. 6$ Movie Night w/ Transportation:  NYIT provides students free shuttle service from the OW campus to the Hicksville movie theatre meeting at 5PM every Tuesday for half priced movies.  What a great price to pay for a invaluable night with friends!
  6. Wednesday Night Flicks:  If you aren’t free on Tuesdays or are in the mood to stay on campus, the Communication Arts Department headed by Don Fizzinoglia hosts free movies at the DeSeversky mansion every Wednesday.  Free snacks and refreshments are included, and Professor Fizz meticulously chooses critically acclaimed films that you might otherwise not have a chance to see anytime soon.  Look for flyers around campus or contact him (dfizzino@nyit.edu) or Christine Parker (cparke01@nyit.edu) directly for more info:
  7. NYIT’s brand new Recreation Room:  The wait is over!  We are pleased to announce that a brand new recreation center has been opened in the SAAC, designed specifically for your leisure and entertainment.  Located on the second floor of the SAAC, this space includes a lounge, television, ping pong table, pool table, and board games.  This is an ideal locale to relax and unwind with all of the new friends you will be meeting when you participate in the aforementioned activities! Shelly, Sinck and I can all agree on a few things:  “The beautiful thing about what we do is that we are the one segment of NYIT that is designed specifically as a healthy distraction from, well, school!  It really helps students unwind from the stresses of coursework,” said Sinch.  To add to this, looking back on my years here at NYIT, I truly believe that your experience can be completely transformed for the better by getting involved at school.  “The best college experience is to have a total college experience by getting involved in campus activities.  It is the “perfect prescription” for detracting from stressful coursework and for having the best possible experience you can in these short 4 years,” said Shelly.  Werda also agreed that getting involved is key in having a fulfilling college experience.  “My first semester, I didn’t really go out of my way to meet new people.  The next semester I decided that I was unhappy with that and got involved here at school.  That decision has made all the difference in my overall happiness.  Go to “The SAC” or Salten Hall and hang out.  “The SAC” isn’t just for athletes, I promise!  Build up the courage to sit down next to a stranger-everyone is really nice! They’re probably looking for a friend, too,” Werda suggested.  Thanks for all of the great suggestions, my friends!  Now stop reading and start DOING, because the fun is just beginning for you!
