Another championship is in the books for the prestigious NYIT Women’s Tennis team.

NYIT has won the East Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. Not only did the athletes secure a championship but they also managed to completely sweep their competition.

A five-match blow out by the Bears against the Queens College Women’s Tennis team accompanied the win.  The beautiful fall day began with Karolina Pondusova and Gabriela Siembab in doubles as they won 8-1. The other doubles team, Melanie Benyadi and Lena Dimmer managed to shutout their opponents for the second match.  Antonella Lopez and Paulina Velasquez also dominated the court as they won with a score of 8-4.

At this point, the team only needed two more points for victory; it was time for the singles matches. Benyadi won her match 6-2, 6-1 and that increased the teams total score 4 points.  In the end it was Paulina Velasquez who came up clutch with the game winning point with her 6-1, 6-1 victory. This is the fifth ECC Championship win in a row for NYIT Women’s Tennis.

However, this was not the only accomplishment for the season. 4 members of the team were named to the ECC Women’s Tennis All-Conference First Team Selection.

Dimmer was named ECC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference. She finished the season 12-2 in singles and 14-1 in doubles while also advancing to the semifinals of the ITA East Region Championship. The three other first team selections include Karolina Pondusova, Melanie Benyadi, and Gabriela Siembab.

Overall, the Bears had a great season all around and look to make it six in a row next season. For more information on the Bears, log onto nyitbears.com and follow on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @nyitbears.
