Hello Campus Slate Readers,

Welcome back for the start of a new school year at New York Institute of Technology and welcome to all of the new students attending the college across the globe. My name is Matt Santamaria, and I am honored to have been named the new Editor in Chief of this publication. I am a currently a senior studying Communication Arts and entering my 4th year as a member of this staff. Prior to my role as Editor in Chief I have worked as a staff writer, Managing Editor, and Sports Editor where last year I was awarded third place in the 2015 New York Press Association Best Newspapers Contest for Best Sports Coverage.

I would like to thank former Editor in Chief Erica Brandt for passing down the reign to me. I would also like to thank our current faculty advisor Professor Kevin Horton and our former longtime advisor Professor John Hanc for the support and guidance in the classroom over the years to help me get to where I am today. This will be an exciting year and I am looking forward what’s to come over the next several months.

The 2016-2017 academic year is a special one for The Campus Slate as this year we will be celebrating the publication’s 50th Anniversary. Over the past 50 years, The Campus Slate has covered impactful stories and we will look back on those pieces in the #SlateThrowback section featured in each print issue throughout the year. In addition, Slate alumni from over the years will share their experiences in the #SlateMemory section. Our first Slate memory is from none another then our faculty advisor Kevin Horton, who was also an Editor in Chief during his time at NYIT. If you know any members of the alumni who would like to contribute, then please contact us via email at slate@nyit.edu.

The Presidential election is heating up and with Election Day around the corner, we check in on what NYIT students have to say about it. This past summer also saw a difficult time for fellow college students in Long Island when Dowling College in Oakdale, NY announced it will be closing its doors. It left many students in question about the future and their studies and a number of students have chosen to transfer to NYIT. We welcome them to our community and in this issue you will learn what admissions did for them and hear from those transfer students. The NYIT Bears Athletic teams are coming off a very successful 2015-2016 season and they are gearing up for even more success this year. This month we check in with reports on our Soccer and Volleyball teams.

Make sure to follow the Campus Slate on social media by liking our Facebook page NYIT-Campus Slate, and follow us on Twitter and Instagram by following @nyitcampusslate. If you have a story idea you want to share please contact us via email at slate@nyit.edu.

I am excited to start my tenure as Editor in Chief, working with my staff and you the NYIT Community to continue the tradition of this historic publication.

Enjoy Reading!!

Editor in Chief
