Women’s basketball is coming off their best season in program history. Coming off a semifinal loss in the ECC Championship playoffs to Roberts Wesleyan, the Bears made a statement in the NCAA Division II tournament. Led by Dina Ragab and Shannon Duer, NYIT won two games (most in program history) in the tournament but lost in the East Regional Championship to Bentley. NYIT finished their historical season with a 26-9 record.
This year, in the 2016-2017 ECC Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll, the Bears finished 2nd in the polls as they look to repeat their historical season and add some hardware along with that. With the exception of team leading scorer Dina Ragab, the Bears have most of their players back. Led by Captain Shannon Duer, NYIT looks to make a statement once again in not only the ECC but the NCAA as well. Duer, earning honorable mention 2016-2017 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Preseason All-America list, finished last year with 10.8 points per game and 11 rebounds per game. She had the third most rebounds in a single season in conference history with 386 rebounds.
“After such an unforgettable year, we are all motivated to get back to the tournament,” said Julie Williams, senior guard. “We know it will not be easy and we will have to work hard everyday. With such a supportive group of girls and a great coaching staff, I know that goal is achievable and I’ll be enjoying the ride every step of the way.”
However, NYIT will have a different voice on the sidelines this year.
After the departure of Head Coach Anthony Crocitto, Kenny Parham will take over NYIT Women’s Basketball. From 2009-2016, Parham was the women’s varsity basketball coach for St. Anthony’s high school. At Saint Anthony’s, he helped stop a 23 year program drought after leading the Friars to three New York State Catholic Champion titles and four NSCHSAA titles.
“I am excited about taking over a team after such a successful season they had last year,” said Coach Parham. “We have started the pre-season and early practices during the season with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Our goal at this point is to get everyone healthy and continue to work hard and get a little better each day.”
Coach Parham brings a winning attitude that the Bears already know well enough. The players have already taken a liking to their new coach.
“Our practices have been very effective with our new head coach,” said Nina Vukosavljevic, junior guard. “We’re learning so much from him as a team and I think we’re getting mentally and physically stronger. We have a lot of returning players, so as long as everyone stays healthy, I think we have a great chance to accomplish great things this year. The goal always remains the same… we want to win a championship.”
Shannon, Julie, Shanice Allen, Sofia Georgiadi and Kesi Goree look to finish off their collegiate career as champions and for NYIT to continue its success from last year. With hard work and determination, the Bears will accomplish great things this year.
