If you’re like me, you are probably thinking of things to fill up the time this summer in between applying for jobs and preparing for the upcoming school year. Look no further your entertainment genie has arrived to break down some summer choices for you. Let’s begin!

For those of us who are tired and have done enough work during the school year and just want to relax, there are so many options… besides Netflix. One of the perks of being a New Yorker is that when your favorite artist goes on tour there is a 99% chance that they are coming to somewhere in the tri-state area. Even better, you have Central Park which host almost every year something called SummerStage. What is Summer Stage you ask? It is a series of concerts that are hosted in Central Park and most of the time they are free.

If you’re not content with free entertainment, then you can always find music festivals with amazing headliners including Tove Lo and Chance the Rapper at Governor’s Ball or Frank Ocean and Vance Joy at Panorama. And if standing outside to hear some tunes isn’t for you there is always the option of going to any of the many, many, many, venues in New York, like the Hammerstein or Bowery Ballroom or Terminal 5, heck there are some really cool out of the box venues in Brooklyn if you’re that indie. The point is you can always feed you soul with music somewhere in the city. When all else fails, we all know Billy Joel will be play MSG at some point this summer.

Now for those of you who aren’t moved by the music there are movies, play and television to keep you entertained. Something quite unusual that I enjoy doing is trying to get tickets to see some of my favorite late night shows film. It’s the ultimate way to have fun and feel like VIP (because you get to see the show before anyone else). Although be warned this is no easy feat. The tickets come out once a month and tend to take some finesse to ‘win’ but if you do it is worth it.
As for cultured lot of you who want to see stories unfold before there very eyes I recommend a good play. You can go the pricier route and see some Broadway bombshells explode (highly recommend Miss Saigon, Dear Evan Hassan, and Waitress). However, this is New York that means that the city is filled to the brim with actors ergo filled to the brim with performances. The Upright Citizens Brigade almost always have some sort of show for you to see and the tickets are usually around 10 dollars, trust me it is a steal. Lastly, for all my people reveling in the golden age of cinematic genius I implore you to hold on to your hats. This summer is dropping blockbusters like Everything Everything, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, King Arthur, Baywatch, Pirates of the Caribbean, and that is just in May. Your choice if you want to splurge on the IMAX though.

Lastly for those of you who just want to get away for a while there are many options too. My first recommendation is always to take advantage of the fact that we go to an international school. I’ve made so many friends from so many different places that I actually got to spend a summer in Finland. If you have a friend who wants you to come visit their home country do it! It is a much experience than going on your own and a lot cheaper. Not only will you not have to pay for a hotel but they live there so the know the best spots that won’t be in your tourist guidebook.

If you are thinking about traveling by flight you should always try and book your ticket on a Wednesday morning because it could be cheaper. Speaking of destinations by flight Thailand for some strange reason is actually pretty affordable to go to, with tickets as cheap as $600 round trip. Also, if you are planning this worldwide adventure I beg of you to check out Groupon.com. I am currently staring at an 8- day vacation to London, Paris and Rome for $849 and it only gets better from there. If your budget is too tight to crash another continent they have amazing deals for the North America, then I recommend Canada in the summer to anyone who hasn’t experience. Canada is an amazing option because we are already so close to it so travel is cheaper… you can even drive there with the right podcast as background music, I recommend NoDought Radio and 2Dope Queens to keep you entertained on the long haul.

Whatever you decided to do with your summer make it magical unless you plan on becoming a teacher you don’t have a lot left so make it count.
