NYIT Men’s Tennis team kick started this year’s schedule with a home 8-1 demolition win against USciences College. After their fourth consecutive ECC title and reaching the NCAA Elite 8 last year, the bears are looking to continue last year’s success on the court this year. With an impressive 21-4 record (5-0 ECC); the NYIT men’s tennis team is looking to finish in first place in the East Coast Conference.
Being the current East Coast Conference Champions is an accolade that comes with added pressure for the Bears. Last year, the boys have endured a tough pre-season. Jorge Gonzales Soler, a current Senior at NYIT took it upon himself to redshirt this season after an injury setback and has in turn become the assistant coach for the current ECC champions.
“Being the assistant coach feels good, helping the team in a different way”, Soler said. “I see tennis in a different way and can experience the difference in feelings and emotion. This learning curve will help me perform at 200% when I’m back on the court”. With a tough schedule ahead, Soles along with the head coach have a tough season ahead of them. “The boys are ready and well equipped for the tough season ahead”, Soles added.
With an abundance of talent on the court, the NYIT Men’s Tennis team also excels off the court in the classroom environment. Ask any student athlete, being at a top college and competing to a high level as well as maintaining your grades is a hard combination for many. Here student athletes have to manage their time effectively; putting in the hard and dedicated hours on the court/field as well as dedicating the same effort within the classroom. The boys have maintained a cumulative 3.0+ GPA, each boasting what it takes to be a successful student athlete. This has been recognized by the Athletic director and the athletic department as a whole.
Coming off a great 2016, NYIT Men’s Tennis are ranked #1st in the East Coast region. Rares Ispas, junior, was selected as the “Sophomore of The Year”, after posting a 15-4 record in dual matches in single play, primarily playing in the number 6 spot.
“It was an unexpected surprise, honestly” said Ispas. “I remember sitting in the banquet, listening to my own records, and I didn’t even realize those were mine”. After enduring a 4 hour match up in the round of 16 of the NCAA’s, Ispas clinched the set to see NYIT Men’s Tennis on its way to their Elite 8 appearance. “Elite 8 was a great achievement, but what is more important for me and the team is to top last year’s performance” said Ispas.
Ispas, along with the rest of the team are now ready to add to their opening day victory and continue the positive start to the season and relive last year’s magnificent accomplishments.
