As the summer heat starts to fade, we start dusting off our schoolbooks and slide into a new semester here at New York Institute of Technology. As the leaves change color from summer to autumn, so begins the Fall 2016 semester and some very exciting administrational changes. New York Institute of Technology welcomes with open arms our new Dean of Architecture and Design, Maria Perbellini.
According to the NYIT page, Perbellini started her wonderful journey in Italy, where she was born, and also earned degrees from Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and the Pratt Institute. From there, she worked for employers such as Peter Eisenman and John Reimnitz until she gained her footing and was able to take charge of her own firm named Pongratz Perbellini, continuing to win numerous design competitions. Within her previous job at Texas Tech University, she was influential to the creation and sustain of the Architecture department as associate dean and pioneered their graphic digital design and fabrication program. Perbellini also created an interdisciplinary PhD program for Land-Use Planning, Management, and Design.
On top of all her success in both her previous jobs, including her time spent at the University of Texas in Austin and at Yeungjin Jr. College in Taegu, South Korea, and also with her own firm, Perbellini is a respected author of not one but two books, Natural Born CaaDesigners and Cyberstone, and a textbook named Digital Media for Design.
“I participated in the dean search and got to speak with her during the interview process,” said Vishnu Anil, an NYIT architecture student. “I believe her direction for our education is exactly what we need for the future. Her views about technology is especially because most firms and CNC and fabrication. It’s exciting to see what she’ll accomplish.” Senior Julia Bruxel calls her “refreshing” and went on to say that she thinks her “new way of thinking will be helpful towards how we will perform in the real world.”
If you want to learn more about our new Dean, there will be a meet and greet Barbeque hosted by the architecture students themselves on October 6th, 2016.
