After a finishing last season with an overall record of 13-5, making an appearance in the East Coast Conference championship game and earning a berth to the NCAA tournament, the men’s lacrosse team has returned to action for some unfinished business!

The 2016 squad took on top seeded Le Moyne College in the NCAA Division II playoffs, where they forced an overtime quarter but were edged by their opponents to conclude their campaign. Coming back to the field with grit, the team is determined to rise above the challenges that come between them and the championship title.

“Since September, we have put much emphasis on playing fast, transferring the ball from the defensive end to the offensive end and beating the defense down the field,” says Coach Dunn.
“In order to compete at the highest level and achieve this season’s goals, the team has focused strongly on physical fitness as well. The idea is to work as hard as you can every day,” says Senior captain, Alex Seltzer. “We have to push the threshold further and further until eventually, we will not get tired in a game because the game day is easier than the normal training day.”

Leading the squad this season are seniors Tom Hughes, Will Kistinger, Joe Morhardt, George Schultz and Alex Seltzer, who have all been called upon by Coach Dunn to fill the captain role because of their strong leadership qualities on and off the field, hard work ethic, and relentlessness.

“My fellow captains and I feel that competition is the best breeding ground for success,” says Seltzer. “We beat up on each other during practice and preach meeting every challenge with intensity. We believe that the more we sweat in training, the less we will bleed in battle.”

Coach Dunn’s philosophy to coaching is simple. “The hardest working, best players play!” says Dunn. “I look for 100% effort from all on the team, day in and day out. I’m constantly reminding the team that our opponents can’t be working harder than us and that we must be more prepared than them. This is effective come game day when the team realizes that practice is much harder than the game. Execution, Effort, and Enthusiasm are our motto this year.”

The team was ranked fifth in the 2017 Face-Off Yearbook rankings as well as the USILA/Nike Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bears are featured as one of five ECC teams in the top 20 rankings and in addition have four members who have been chosen as 2017 Preseason All-Americans. These members include Hughes and Seltzer who have been selected to the first team. Also, Kistinger earned a second team nod and Junior Ian Prate earned a spot on the third team.
