NYIT is proud to announce that former NYIT Athletic Director Clyde Doughty and former NYIT Men’s Lacrosse Jack Kaley are among the six members of the inaugural inductees of the East Coast Conference’s Hall of Fame- three student-athletes, one coach, and two administrators.

Doughty started his legacy at NYIT when he attended the university in 1976 as a basketball student-athlete. He held leadership roles within the conference, serving as the men’s basketball sport chair, SAAC Liaison, and as the NYCAC President. He also served on many different NCAA committees including the Division II Management Council where he contributed to numerous committees and task groups, including the Division II Budget and Finance Committee, the Division II National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Graduation Rates Project Team.

“Clyde is incredibly deserving of this honor,” says friend and former coworker, Gail Wasmus. “As one of the founding members of the ECC and NYCAC before that, Clyde represents all that is positive in Division II Athletics. I have worked with Clyde for over 20 years and he has always had a strong commitment to the student athlete experience.”

During his time at NYIT, Doughty was also dominant on the campus including developing and implementing the NYIT Bears Den Fund Raising Association, the Bears Athletic Hall of Fame, the BEARS Mentor Educational Program and the Night Out on the Bears Program.

“When I heard that Clyde was going to be honored by the ECC in their inaugural Hall of Fame induction class, I thought it was so fitting,” says friend and former coworker, Sabrina Polidoro. “His dedication to excellence not only on the fields of play but in the classroom is inspiring. With a total of 38 years at NYIT, he has been integral in laying the foundation of the program’s success. But much more than that, he made NYIT family. He taught me many professional and life lessons during the four years I worked with him and I continue to carry them with me today. He is so deserving of this honor and I’m so very happy for him.”

After leaving his mark at NYIT, he left in 2014 after four years as Assistant AD and 26 years as the school’s Athletic Director- and now serves as the athletics director of the Bowie State University Bulldogs in Maryland.

Kaley served as the NYIT Men’s Lacrosse coach for over 16 years (1993-2009). He retired in 2009 with a record of 185-33 with an incredible winning percentage of .849. His accolades include three-time Conference Coach of the Year, two-time Field Turf Division II Coach of the Year, four-time USILA Division II Coach of the Year, and the 2007 USILA “Howdy Myers” Man of the Year. At the time of his retirement, he was Division II’s all-time leader in wins and currently is second all time in victories. He led the Bears to five conference championships, eight NCAA tournaments, and six National Championship Game appearances (won 4 of the six appearances).

“Coach Kaley was one of the biggest contributors to the growth of Men’s lacrosse in the ECC and of Division 2 lacrosse,” said NYIT Men’s Lacrosse Coach William Dunn, former assistant coach to Kaley.

“It was my pleasure to work with Coach Kaley for a number of years,” said Dean Kamvakis, NYIT Head Athletic Trainer. “One of the hardest working coaches I have had the opportunity to work for. Highly competitive and an extreme motivator, he encouraged his athletes to reach beyond their capabilities and excel on the field. He always harped on the fundamentals of the game and winning the ground ball “war”. He was a living legend as he was recognized everywhere he went and had the stories to go with it.”

The inductees were voted in by the Hall of Fame committee including ECC administrators, coaches, sports information directors, faculty athletic representatives, and the ECC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President. The six selections will be honored at the ECC’s annual awards banquet on Monday, May 22 at the University of Bridgeport.
